An open frame diesel generator — also called an open type or open set generator — is a complete genset consisting of a diesel engine coupled to an AC alternator, mounted on a rigid structural steel base frame, with no acoustic canopy or weatherproof enclosure. All major components remain exposed for unrestricted access and natural airflow.
This differs fundamentally from silent diesel generators, which house the same engine and alternator inside a sound-attenuated steel canopy. Silent units reduce noise to 65–75 dB(A) at 7 meters; open frame generator sets typically operate at 85–100 dB(A) — making them best suited for industrial environments where noise compliance is not the primary constraint.
